In the 21st century, increasing energy efficiency is a challenge for the entire economy. The European Union's goal is 32.5% greater energy efficiency by 2030. According to the International Energy Agency, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, industrial processes and transport could reduce global energy demand by a third by 2050 to help control global greenhouse gas emissions.
Railways can be more energy efficient. We have calculated that we can reduce electricity consumption by 1.2 TWh in 10 years. This will reduce CO2 emissions by over 1,000,000 tonnes!
This is a specific and real goal that we commit ourselves to strive for. We do it for the railway, as the most ecological means of transport; for passengers, to encourage them to use our services; and for the climate – and this way we support the Polish Energy Policy.
1.2 TWh of saved energy is 1 million tonnes of CO2; this is as if we:
- Supplied power to the Central Railway Station for 200 years.
- Rode the Pendolino train for free on all routes for 12 years.
- Planted 8 Białowieża National Parks.
